Scientific Name: Leucophaeus atricilla

Noisy coastal gull known for its distinctive laughing call.

The Laughing Gull is a familiar sight along beaches and coastal towns of the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. Named for its loud, laughing call, this medium-sized gull often gathers in flocks near shorelines, fishing piers, and harbors. During breeding season, adults display a striking black head and bright red bill.

How to Identify a Laughing Gull
Look for a medium-sized gull with a dark hood during summer, gray wings, and a red bill. In winter the head turns mostly white with a small dark ear spot.

Where You'll See Them
Beaches, coastal bays, docks, fishing piers, and sometimes parking lots near the ocean.

What They Eat
Fish, crabs, insects, shrimp, and scraps from human activity.

When to Spot Them
Common year-round along much of the southern coast; most abundant spring through fall in northern areas.

Their laughing call often alerts other birds to food sources.
