Scientific Name: Pluvialis squatarola

Large plover known for bold black belly during breeding season.

The Black-bellied Plover is the largest plover regularly found on North American beaches. In breeding plumage, adults display a dramatic black face and belly contrasting with white sides. Outside the breeding season they appear silvery gray, blending in well with sandy beaches and tidal flats.

How to Identify a Black-bellied Plover
