LIBBY ISLAND LIGHT - Maine
Location: Machias Bay entrance
Currently Operational: Yes
Height: 91 feet
Year Established: 1822
Libby Island Light stands on a small, rocky island at the entrance to Machias Bay and has been guiding vessels along the Downeast coast since 1822. The original wooden tower was one of Maine’s earlier lighthouses, built to help ships navigate the often-treacherous waters near Machiasport. The current granite tower is attached to a keeper’s house, a classic design for its era. Over the years, Libby Island Light was automated and no longer requires an onsite keeper. Today, the lighthouse remains an active aid to navigation, though the island itself is privately owned and not open to the public. Its remote setting and sturdy stone construction give it a timeless, no-nonsense feel that fits perfectly with Maine’s rugged coastal reputation.
