GRINDLE POINT LIGHT - Maine
Location: Gilkey Harbor - Islesboro
Currently Operational: Yes
Height: 67 feet
Year Established: 1850
Grindle Point Light, built in 1874, sits along the western shore of Isle au Haut and marks a key passage in Penobscot Bay. Unlike many decommissioned Maine lighthouses, Grindle Point Light is still an active aid to navigation today. The original keeper’s house remains on site, and the tower was added a few years after the light was first established. The property is managed by the Isle au Haut Historical Society, and during the summer months the keeper’s house operates as a small maritime museum. Accessible by ferry, Grindle Point Light offers visitors a rare chance to explore a working lighthouse while enjoying one of Maine’s quieter island communities.
