Great Duck Island Light has watched over the entrance to Frenchman Bay since 1890. Located on a remote island south of Mount Desert Island, the lighthouse helped guide ships safely toward Bar Harbor and surrounding ports. The site includes a round brick and granite tower and several keeper’s buildings.

The light was automated in the 1980s, ending nearly a century of on-site lighthouse keeping. Today, the property is owned by the Bar Harbor College of the Atlantic and used as a seasonal research station, focusing on seabirds and marine ecology. While the island is not generally open to casual visitors, the lighthouse continues to serve as both a navigational aid and a hub for scientific study.
