GOOSE ROCKS LIGHT - Maine
Location: East Entrance Fox Islands Thorofare - North Haven
Currently Operational: Yes
Height: 51 feet
Year Established: 1890
Goose Rocks Light stands on a rocky ledge in Penobscot Bay at the eastern entrance to the Fox Island Thoroughfare near North Haven and was first lit in 1890. Its purpose was to warn ships away from dangerous offshore rocks that had caused numerous wrecks. The lighthouse originally consisted of a small keeper’s house with an attached cast-iron tower, a practical design for such an exposed location. Life for keepers here was especially challenging due to the island’s isolation and harsh weather. The light was deactivated in the mid-20th century and replaced by a nearby automated aid to navigation. Today, the original lighthouse is privately owned, and it’s the only offshore lighthouse where you can spend the night
