DOUBLING POINT RANGE LIGHTS - Maine

Location: Arrowsic Island - Kennebec River
Currently Operational: Yes
Height: 33 feet
Year Established: 1898

The Doubling Point Range Lights are a pair of historic navigational aids located along the Kennebec River. Established in 1898, these range lights worked together to guide vessels safely through a tricky bend in the river known as Doubling Point, an area once heavily traveled by commercial ships carrying ice, lumber, and other goods. When the front and rear lights aligned, mariners knew they were on the correct course.

Both structures are modest, wooden towers reflecting their purely functional role. The lights were deactivated in 1988 when modern navigation technology made them obsolete. Today, the Doubling Point Range Lights are preserved by the Friends of the Doubling Point Range Lights organization and remain a beloved piece of Maine’s maritime heritage, visible reminders of the river’s working past.
